Verdict: a well-built chain that traders have left

dYdX invented much of what on-chain perpetuals look like today, and dYdX Chain is still one of the most decentralized designs in the sector: its own proof-of-stake network, an order book run by validators, open-source software and fees paid to stakers rather than to a company. The problem in 2026 is liquidity. The BTC, ETH and SOL markets that carry 98% of its volume traded about $14.1B in November 2025 and about $1.2B in August 2026, and on September 24, 2026 the whole exchange did roughly $74M in 24 hours — around 1/130th of Hyperliquid. At the end of June 2026 dYdX Labs moved its focus to a new venue, Arcus. dYdX still works and remains cheap for makers, but it is no longer where the depth is.

Pros

  • Base maker fee of 0.010% (Hyperliquid 0.015%), zero from tier 4 and rebates to −0.011% at the top.
  • 50x on BTC and ETH, 20x SOL; cross and isolated margin on every market.
  • Own Cosmos chain, self-custody, no KYC; login with Google, email, Solana, EVM or Cosmos wallets.
  • Staked DYDX cuts fees by up to 50%; affiliate-referred accounts start at tier 3.
  • One of the more generous affiliate programs for people who refer: 30–50% of taker fees in USDC, lifetime.

Cons

  • Volume down more than 90% from late 2025; outside BTC, ETH and SOL most books trade under $200k a day.
  • Base taker fee 0.050% — higher than Hyperliquid (0.045%) and Lighter Standard (0%).
  • Only 78 active markets; 218 older markets are in final settlement.
  • dYdX Labs now focuses on Arcus; collateral is being migrated off Noble USDC.
  • Not available in the US, Canada, the UK or sanctioned countries.

What dYdX is in 2026

dYdX began on Ethereum and ran its v3 exchange on a StarkEx layer 2. Since late 2023 the live product is dYdX Chain (v4), a standalone blockchain built with the Cosmos SDK and CometBFT. Each validator keeps an in-memory order book; orders are gossiped off-chain and only matched trades are written to blocks, so placing and cancelling orders is gas-free. The native token DYDX secures the chain through staking and pays for governance; trading fees go to stakers and validators (see the official docs).

Three details matter for users. The active validator set is 21 (the on-chain maximum), cut from 31 by a governance vote that closed on September 17, 2026 — it was 50 a year earlier — with about 281M DYDX bonded and a 21-day unbonding period. Reviews that still say "60+ validators" are out of date. The dydx.trade front-end is run by the dYdX Ops subDAO, not by dYdX Trading Inc., which wrote the software. And in a post dated June 30, 2026 (updated July 1), dYdX Labs published "A New Arc": it introduced Arcus, an exchange for tokenized stocks and perps built with Robinhood Crypto on Robinhood Chain, said the team is "100% focused" on it, and promised that dYdX v4 "will continue to be supported" with funds fully accessible. Read dYdX in 2026 as a community-run chain rather than a startup's flagship.

DYDX itself traded at about $0.13 on September 24, 2026 (CoinGecko), a market cap of about $110M, against an all-time high of $4.52 in March 2024. The app estimates staking yield at about 1.55% APR.

dYdX fees, verified on-chain

Fees are set by governance and read from the chain's fee-tier module. The tier depends on your 30-day trailing volume across all subaccounts, and the same schedule applies to every market.

Staking discounts. Bonded DYDX lowers positive fees (not rebates). The thresholds rise with your fee tier:

Source: dydxprotocol/v4/feetiers/staking_tiers, September 24, 2026. At $0.13, 3,000 DYDX is about $390.

What a trade costs. A $10,000 taker round trip costs $10.00 at tier 1, $8.00 at tier 3 (the affiliate starting tier) and $9.00 on Hyperliquid's base tier. A $10,000 maker round trip costs $2.00 on dYdX, $1.00 at tier 3, and $3.00 on Hyperliquid. With 3,000 DYDX staked the tier-1 taker round trip drops to $7.50. So dYdX is cheaper for patient limit orders and more expensive for market orders unless you stake or come through a referral.

Promotions. dYdX has run zero-fee windows on single markets — BTC-USD and BONK-USD from May 1 to June 30, 2026, SOL-USD in December 2025 and January 2026, according to the on-chain market fee discount parameters. None was active on September 24, 2026. The on-chain trading-reward multiplier was 0 on the same day, and the last Surge rewards season announced on the dYdX blog ran through June 2026, so do not count on DYDX rebates today. The liquidation rebate program shown in the app applies to non-BTC markets; check its terms before relying on it.

Other costs. Funding is paid every hour. Liquidations carry a fee of up to 1.5% of the position (clob liquidations_config). Deposits and withdrawals may include bridge or gas charges that the app quotes before you confirm.

Leverage, markets and margin

Maximum leverage is 1 ÷ initial margin fraction. As of September 24, 2026:

MarketsMax leverageInitial marginMaintenance margin
BTC-USD, ETH-USD50x2%1.2%
SOL-USD20x5%3%
29 markets (XRP, AVAX, DOGE, LINK, APT, TIA…)10x10%varies
46 markets (HYPE, TAO, ONDO, ENA, WTI, XAG…)5x20%varies

From indexer.dydx.trade/v4/perpetualMarkets: 78 ACTIVE markets (2 at 50x, 1 at 20x, 29 at 10x, 46 at 5x). The docs describe an open-interest-based IMF that can raise the margin requirement as a market's open interest grows.

That is higher than Hyperliquid on ETH (25x) and BTC (40x), level with it on SOL (20x), and level with Lighter's 50x on BTC and ETH. The 78 active markets are mostly crypto, plus silver (XAG) and WTI crude oil added recently. The indexer also lists 218 markets in FINAL_SETTLEMENT — delisted contracts, including every former isolated-only market — so the "200+ markets" figure in older reviews is out of date. Every active market supports both cross and isolated margin from the order ticket, and the ticket offers Limit, Market and Advanced (stop and take-profit) orders.

The dydx.trade Markets page on September 24, 2026: about $74.3M of 24-hour volume, $36.9M of open interest and $5,941 of fees generated in 24 hours.

Volume: the number that decides it

On September 24, 2026 the markets page showed $74.3M of 24-hour volume, $36.9M of open interest and $5,941 of fees. ETH ($34.5M), SOL ($29.3M) and BTC ($9.2M) were 98% of volume; the next busiest market, XRP, traded $170k. Summing the daily candles of those three markets from the public indexer gives this trend:

MonthBTC + ETH + SOL volume on dYdX
Nov 2025$14.1B
Jan 2026$9.1B
Mar 2026$4.8B
May 2026$3.0B

Sep 1–24, 2026$0.8B

indexer.dydx.trade/v4/candles/perpetualMarkets (1DAY usdVolume), fetched September 24, 2026. Build-time ranking from CoinGecko: dYdX $36M 24h volume, rank #18 among perp DEXs.

What that means in practice: a $10k market order in BTC, ETH or SOL fills fine, but a large order in anything else can move the price, and thin books make funding and liquidation prices noisier. The protocol's MegaVault, which quotes liquidity across markets, held only about $1.75M of equity on September 24, 2026.

How to start trading on dYdX (5 steps)

1

Open dydx.trade and sign in

Click Sign in. Options are Google, email, Phantom (Solana), WalletConnect and more wallets — EVM wallets such as MetaMask and Cosmos wallets such as Keplr. No KYC.

2

Create your dYdX Chain account

EVM and Solana wallets sign two requests that derive your dYdX Chain address; Cosmos wallets sign one. Social-login users set up two-factor authentication.

3

Deposit USDC

Wallet users deposit USDC through the built-in Skip Go flow from Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon or Avalanche; the Instant option lands in about a minute and dYdX announced it as fee-free for deposits of $100 or more (June 2025 — confirm the quote). Social-login accounts can only deposit from Coinbase or by sending USDC to the Noble address shown in the app. Read the USDC migration note first.

4

Pick Cross or Isolated and place the order

Set leverage (50x maximum on BTC and ETH), choose Limit, Market or Advanced, add take-profit / stop-loss, and check the fee and liquidation price in the receipt.

5

Withdraw

Withdrawals go back through the same bridge flow; the app quotes the route and cost before you sign.

The Noble USDC migration (read before depositing)

dYdX collateral is USDC that reaches the chain through Noble, a Cosmos chain where Circle issued native USDC. On September 10, 2026 Circle announced that new minting on Noble stops on October 13, 2026, CCTP V1 limits fall from October 31, and Noble USDC and its CCTP routes are fully paused on January 12, 2027. The dYdX Foundation said the change does not affect balances, operations or trading today, and that dYdX Chain is moving its native USDC and sole trading collateral to Circle-issued Injective USDC; Injective says dYdX is the first chain to migrate and the front-end experience will not change. Until the app confirms support, do not send Injective USDC to your dYdX address, and use the in-app deposit flow rather than manual transfers.

Is dYdX safe? Audits, incidents and custody

Most "is dYdX safe" pages stop at "it's decentralized". Here is the record, from dYdX's own post-mortems, the audit repositories and on-chain governance:

  • Custody. Non-custodial: your USDC sits in a dYdX Chain account controlled by your keys rather than held by a company. The app footer says dydx.trade is "operated by dYdX Ops subDAO, utilizing software open sourced by dYdX Trading Inc."
  • Code and audits. The chain software is public at github.com/dydxprotocol/v4-chain (under dYdX's own licence). dYdX's security page says the protocol was audited by Informal Systems; the repo holds its Phase I–III reports and follow-ups for Q4 2023, Q1 2024 and Q2 2024, and Informal published a Q3 2025 audit of proposer-selection changes. An audit lowers risk; it does not remove it.
  • October 10, 2025 chain halt. During the crash, an isolated market's whole open interest was liquidated in one trade; an order-of-operations bug in the collateral-pool transfer tripped a failsafe and the chain stopped from about 5:35 PM ET until 1:41 AM ET on October 11 — roughly eight hours with no trading, liquidations or withdrawals. After the restart some validators posted stale oracle prices until about 05:35 UTC. Governance approved 462,097.79 USDC from the insurance fund for 27 affected accounts (proposal 301, passed November 1, 2025), and the bug was fixed.
  • January 2026 client-library compromise. An attacker published malicious versions of the official developer libraries — npm @dydxprotocol/v4-client-js and PyPI dydx-v4-client 1.1.5.post1 (advisory PYSEC-2026-1). It hit developers and bot operators who installed those versions; if you run a dYdX bot, pin known-good versions.
  • v3-era incidents (the old Ethereum/StarkEx exchange, now sunset): a deposit-contract bug in November 2021, where the team white-hat-rescued about $2M; malicious npm packages in September 2022 (no funds lost, per the post-mortem); a YFI/SUSHI oracle-manipulation attack in November 2023 that drained more than $9M from the v3 insurance fund; and a July 2024 hijack of the dydx.exchange domain through its registrar, which cost two users about $31,000.
  • Insurance fund. The chain's insurance fund held about $8.1M USDC on September 24, 2026 (insurance_fund module account). In April 2026 governance moved 10M USDC of it to the Ops subDAO, Treasury subDAO and Foundation (proposal 372), leaving a smaller buffer than a year ago.

Our reading: the smart-contract and custody design is sound and well audited, and incidents have been disclosed and compensated. The practical risks now are operational — a small validator set that has halted before, thinning liquidity, and the Noble USDC migration. Mobile: dYdX lists official iOS and Android apps under App Download on dydx.xyz (the iOS app is published by dYdX Operations Services Ltd and is not in the US App Store). Only install from that link, and bookmark dydx.trade to avoid phishing copies.

dYdX affiliate program (if you want to refer)

For readers who run a community or channel, dYdX pays one of the richer on-chain commissions. Terms as enforced by the chain on September 24, 2026:

  • Eligibility: trade $10,000 on dYdX, then open Referrals at dydx.trade/referrals and click Invite Friends; you can set a custom code.
  • Commission: 30% of referees' taker fees; 40% once your referees trade over $1M in 30 days; 50% above $10M (affiliates/all_affiliate_tiers). 99 whitelisted VIP addresses receive 50% regardless.
  • Caps: each referee counts for at most $2M of volume and $10,000 of commission per rolling 30 days.
  • Payout: USDC, credited on-chain every block, for as long as the referee trades.
  • Referee benefit: starts at fee tier 3 (0.040% taker / 0.005% maker).
  • Restrictions: not available in the US, Canada or other restricted jurisdictions.

The help center still describes a 15% standard rate with a $3,000 cap; its FAQ says the base rate was raised to 30% and the chain parameters above confirm the higher numbers. Example: a referee trading $250,000 a month as taker at tier 3 pays $100 in fees, so you would earn $30 at the 30% tier. The public leaderboard on the Referrals page shows the top affiliate at about $94.9K of lifetime earnings.

Both are order-book perp DEXs with hourly funding and 50x on BTC, built very differently: dYdX on its own validator chain, Lighter as a zk-rollup that proves its matching on Ethereum. On the numbers that decide where to trade, Lighter led by a wide margin in September 2026.

Depth follows volume: a simulated $100,000 BTC market buy cost about 0.5 bp against mid on Lighter and 5.8 bp on dYdX the same day. dYdX keeps two real advantages: no speed bump on taker orders, and maker rebates for very large makers at its top tiers. For everyone else Lighter is both cheaper and deeper; Lighter's own trade-offs (the Standard-account delay, a younger rollup) are in the Lighter review and Lighter fees.

Risks and what to watch

  • Liquidity decline. Volume on the main markets fell from $14.1B (Nov 2025) to $1.2B (Aug 2026). Thin books mean more slippage and noisier liquidations; check the Depth tab before sizing up.
  • Team focus. dYdX Labs is building Arcus. The chain is governed by DYDX holders and the front-end is run by a subDAO; development pace on v4 is likely to slow.
  • Collateral migration. The Noble to Injective USDC switch is a one-off operational event with hard Circle deadlines (October 13, 2026 and January 12, 2027). Follow official dYdX channels and do not bridge manually.
  • Validator concentration. The active set is capped at 21 validators; a chain halt would freeze trading, deposits and withdrawals until validators restart it.
  • Leverage. At 50x the initial margin is 2% and maintenance 1.2%; a move of well under 2% can liquidate you, with a liquidation fee of up to 1.5%.
  • Jurisdiction. The US, Canada, the UK and sanctioned countries are restricted. A wallet flagged in one goes to close-only mode and loses front-end access after 7 days, so do not use a VPN.

Frequently asked questions

What is dYdX?

dYdX is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange that runs on its own Cosmos SDK blockchain, dYdX Chain (v4). Validators run the order book and matching engine in memory and settle trades on-chain; collateral is USDC and you keep custody. The main web front-end, dydx.trade, is operated by the dYdX Ops subDAO. On September 24, 2026 it listed 78 active perpetual markets and did about $74M of 24-hour volume.

What are dYdX fees?

At the base tier (under $1M of 30-day volume) dYdX charges 0.050% taker and 0.010% maker. Seven tiers take the taker fee down to 0.025% and turn the maker fee into a rebate of up to −0.011% above $200M. Staked DYDX cuts positive fees by up to 50%, and accounts that join through an affiliate link start at tier 3 (0.040% / 0.005%). There is no gas on orders; deposits and withdrawals may carry bridge or gas costs.

Is dYdX still active in 2026?

Yes, but much smaller. The chain keeps producing blocks and the app works, yet the three markets that make up 98% of volume (BTC, ETH, SOL) fell from about $14.1B in November 2025 to about $1.2B in August 2026. In a post dated June 30, 2026 (updated July 1) dYdX Labs said it is "100% focused" on Arcus, a new exchange built with Robinhood Crypto, while stating that dYdX v4 will continue to be supported and funds stay accessible.

dYdX vs Hyperliquid: which is better?

For almost every trader, Hyperliquid. On September 24, 2026 it did about $9.7B of perp volume against about $74M on dYdX, lists 178 perp markets against 78, and its base taker fee is lower (0.045% vs 0.050%). dYdX keeps two edges: a cheaper base maker fee (0.010% vs 0.015%) and 50x on ETH (Hyperliquid 25x). Full details in our Hyperliquid vs dYdX comparison.

How does the dYdX affiliate program work?

Once you have traded $10,000 on dYdX you can create a link at dydx.trade/referrals. The protocol pays you 30% of your referees' taker fees, rising to 40% when your referees trade over $1M in 30 days and 50% above $10M, in USDC every block, for as long as they trade. Each referee counts for at most $2M of volume and $10,000 of commission per 30 days. Referees start at fee tier 3. The program is not available in the US, Canada or other restricted jurisdictions.

Is dYdX safe?

dYdX is non-custodial and its chain software is public on GitHub and audited by Informal Systems (pre-launch phases I–III plus follow-up reports through 2025). It has had real incidents: on October 10, 2025 the chain halted for about eight hours after a liquidation edge case, and governance paid 462,097.79 USDC from the insurance fund to 27 affected accounts; in January 2026 an attacker published malicious versions of dYdX's npm and PyPI client libraries. The v3-era exchange had a $9M+ insurance-fund loss to YFI manipulation (2023) and a domain hijack (2024). Main risks today are thinning liquidity, a 21-validator set and a smaller insurance fund (about $8.1M).

Is dYdX available in the US?

No. dYdX's geo-restriction help page names the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and sanctioned countries such as Iran and North Korea, and says the list is not exhaustive. Wallets flagged in a restricted region go into close-only mode (cancel, reduce, withdraw) and are blocked from the front-end after 7 days. The affiliate program excludes the same regions. Read the Terms of Use before you deposit.

What happens to dYdX USDC when Noble shuts down?

dYdX collateral today is USDC bridged through the Noble chain. Circle announced on September 10, 2026 that new minting on Noble stops on October 13, 2026 and Noble USDC is fully paused on January 12, 2027. The dYdX Foundation said current balances and trading are unaffected and that dYdX Chain is moving its collateral to Circle-issued Injective USDC. Do not send Injective USDC to dYdX until the app says it is supported.
