Short answer

The best DEX in 2026 is Hyperliquid: it has the deepest on-chain order book, 178 perpetual markets (as of October 20, 2026), gas-free orders and 0.045% / 0.015% taker/maker base fees, 4% less on your first $25M with code HOLYGRAIL (Hyperliquid referral code).

Open Hyperliquid with code HOLYGRAIL → 4% off your trading fees on your first $25M of volume.

Pick Lighter for 0% fees, Aster for leverage up to 1001x, and Uniswap (Ethereum and L2s) or Jupiter (Solana) if you only swap tokens.

We earn a commission when you sign up through our links; it never raises your fees.

The longer answer: edgeX or trade.xyz are the picks for US stock perps, and Aster also offers hidden orders that stay out of the public book. For plain token swaps, use the leading DEX on your chain: Uniswap, Jupiter, PancakeSwap (BNB Chain) or Aerodrome (Base). Coming from Binance or Bybit? Best DEX 2026: decentralized exchanges compared on fees, leverage and liquidity

The 10 best decentralized exchanges ranked on liquidity, verified fees, track record and ease of use, then the details: picks by use case and by asset (Bitcoin, Ethereum, altcoins, meme coins), a live volume table, fees for 14 venues, the best spot swap DEXs, a full DEX list and a safety checklist.

1. The 10 best DEXs in 2026, ranked

Hyperliquid is #1 and the only venue near the top on every measure: liquidity, cost, track record and ease of opening an account. Perp DEXs (for leveraged longs and shorts) and spot DEXs (for swapping tokens) are ranked together because that is how most people search, but the "type" column tells you which job each one does.

Base fee = taker / maker for a new account on perp DEXs, or the pool/router fee on spot DEXs (from each venue's official docs). 30-day volume: DefiLlama perps dashboard (read September 27, 2026) for perp DEXs, DefiLlama DEX and aggregator overviews (read September 27, 2026) for spot; perp and spot volume are not directly comparable, and some perp volume is driven by points campaigns.

How we ranked. Four checks, in this order: liquidity (30-day volume from DefiLlama, plus order-book depth and open interest from each venue's API for perps), all-in cost (base fees from official fee pages, checked September 24–27, 2026, plus gas and app fees), track record and custody (how long it has run, how deposits are held, audits and incidents), and ease of use (wallet or email login, apps, restricted countries). Within each type, volume alone would put Aster above Lighter and PancakeSwap above Jupiter; we rank Lighter higher for its 0% fees and ZK-proven matching, and Jupiter higher because it routes each swap across Solana's main pools for the best price. We hold referral codes for Hyperliquid, Lighter, Aster and edgeX and none for the spot DEXs; the codes do not set the order. Full method: how we review exchanges.

3. Best DEX by use case: the details

The ranking above is the short answer; this section is the long one. There is no single best decentralized exchange, only the best one for the trade in front of you. A trader opening a 10x BTC position needs something very different from someone swapping ETH for a new token on Base. These picks are sorted by the question most readers are really asking: where should I put my first trade? Every venue below lets you trade from your own wallet without identity verification, and every number was read from the venue's own documentation or API.

Best overall · Best perp DEX

Hyperliquid

Hyperliquid runs its own layer 1: HyperCore holds the order book, margin and liquidations on-chain, and HyperEVM runs smart contracts beside it. Orders, cancels and funding payments cost no gas, and fills feel like a centralized exchange. On September 25, 2026 the public Hyperliquid API listed 178 perpetual markets with about $8.25B of 24-hour volume and roughly $12.8B of open interest; on a normal week it trades $4–8B a day. Leverage goes up to 40x on BTC, 25x on ETH and 20x on SOL.

Base fees are 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker, falling with 14-day volume, with another 5–40% off for staking HYPE. Joining through a referral link takes 4% off your fees on your first $25M of volume. You can log in with an EVM wallet or with an email address (a 6-digit code), which makes it the easiest serious perp DEX to open. Beyond the core perps, builder-deployed HIP-3 markets add US stocks, indices and commodities, and there are 336 spot pairs (as of October 20, 2026).

Trade-offs: leverage is lower than on Aster or edgeX; USDC withdrawals to Arbitrum cost 0.2 USDC plus a tiny gas fee; deposits below 5 USDC are lost; and a large share of all on-chain perp trading now depends on one chain and its validator set. The Terms of Use (June 15, 2026) exclude the United States, Ontario and sanctioned regions. Full Hyperliquid review · fees explained · step-by-step tutorial

Best zero-fee DEX

Lighter

Lighter is a zk-rollup on Ethereum whose order matching and liquidations are proven with zero-knowledge proofs. Its default Standard account pays 0% maker and 0% taker on perps and spot. The catch is speed: on Standard, taker orders and cancels wait 300 ms before they reach the book, while maker orders are not delayed (Lighter's trading-fees docs, checked October 6, 2026). Premium accounts are an opt-in upgrade that pays 0.028% taker and 0.004% maker for 140 ms latency, with discounts for staking the LIT token. BTC and ETH go to 50x, SOL to 25x, and most altcoins to 10x. Lighter also lists perps on US equities, indices and pre-IPO companies.

Trade-offs: the latency penalty matters for scalpers; points campaigns have driven part of its volume; and the Terms (December 29, 2025) exclude the US, Canada, the UK, China, Russia, Ukraine and several sanctioned countries. With our code 718610TD your first week of Premium fees is rebated. Lighter review · Hyperliquid vs Lighter

Best for high leverage and hidden orders

Aster

Aster runs on its own Aster Chain layer 1 and offers several trading modes. The order-book perps charge 0.04% taker and 0% maker on standard crypto pairs, and RWA perps (stocks and other real-world assets) cost 0.0125% taker since September 7, 2026. Its 1001x mode offers up to 1001x on BTC/USD: at 500x and above you cannot add margin and profit is capped (around 500% ROI at 500x and 750x, around 300% at 1001x), and below 500x a 0.08% open and close fee applies. Hidden orders are limit orders that never appear in the public order book, and the resulting position is excluded from public data feeds, which is unusual on a DEX, where positions are normally visible to everyone.

Trade-offs: 1001x leverage means a 0.1% move can liquidate you; treat it as a lottery ticket, not a strategy. Group B tokens pay 0.1% taker. The Terms (February 25, 2026) exclude the US, Canada, the UK, China, Russia, Ukraine and sanctioned countries. With code DTLpLc, 5% of your perp fees comes back as a next-day rebate. Best for US stock perps

edgeX, trade.xyz and Ondo Perps

edgeX is a self-custodial order-book DEX on its own Ethereum-secured StarkEx rollup. Of its 175 markets, 93 are US stock and ETF perps, alongside 79 crypto and commodity markets and 3 FX pairs. Fees are 0.045% taker and 0.040% maker; BTC and ETH go to 100x, most stock perps to 10x or less, and funding settles every 4 hours. Wallet or email login, iOS and Android apps. Its Terms exclude the US and Canada. edgeX publishes no benefit for referred users, so the link below only supports this site. edgeX review · open edgeX

trade.xyz is the largest set of HIP-3 markets on Hyperliquid: 109 live stock, index, commodity and FX perps with about $2.6B of 24-hour volume on September 25, 2026. In growth mode, fees are just 0.009% taker and 0.003% maker. The S&P 500 contract goes to 50x, the XYZ100 index to 30x, and NVDA, TSLA and AAPL to 20x. You can trade these markets directly on app.hyperliquid.xyz, where your HOLYGRAIL discount still applies. trade.xyz guide

Ondo Perps comes from Ondo, the issuer of tokenized US securities, and focuses on stock perps. Its promotional rate is 0.025% taker and 0.01% maker, and our code AGHSGT takes another 5% off your fees. Ondo Perps review

Remember that a stock perp tracks a price; you never own the share, receive dividends or vote. Weekend and after-hours prices come from the venue's own pricing, not the stock exchange.

Best mobile apps · iPhone

Based, Liquid and fomo

Hyperliquid's own app is Android-only, so on an iPhone you either add the web app to your home screen or use an app built on top of Hyperliquid (our Hyperliquid app guide compares every option). These apps route your orders to the same Hyperliquid order book but add a builder fee on each trade. A Hyperliquid referral code still counts: on-chain fills checked October 1, 2026 show that the referral discount also applies to orders placed through apps with a builder code, so HOLYGRAIL takes 4% off Hyperliquid's part of the fee in apps you connect with the same wallet, such as Based and Liquid, with the builder fee on top. One catch: apps such as Phantom often set their own Hyperliquid referral code on accounts that have none, so enter a code on Hyperliquid before you start using an app. fomo is different: it has no wallet connection (Apple, Google or email only) and creates its own wallet and Hyperliquid account for you, so HOLYGRAIL cannot apply there; use fomo's own referral code instead (ours: DailyWiseKite). If you trade from a desktop, the plain Hyperliquid web app is always cheaper.

  • Based (iPhone, Android and web) adds the smallest fee: +0.025%, for 0.070% taker in total. Staking, a card and a clean chart view. Code HOLYGRAIL is Based's own referral program and gives you no discount. Based review · open Based
  • Liquid adds +0.05% on Hyperliquid perps (0.095% taker in total), with no extra fee on spot or Lighter markets, plus stocks, FX and prediction markets in one balance. Code JV2EN2CX takes 10% off Liquid's fee for life. The iOS app did not appear in Apple's Japanese or UK storefronts on September 24, 2026. Liquid review · open Liquid
  • fomo (iOS, Android and web) is the simplest for beginners: +0.05% on perps and a 0.50% spot fee, cut to 0.45% with a referral; code DailyWiseKite gives 10% off. No perps for US users. fomo review · open fomo

Pacifica, Polymarket Perps, dYdX and Antarctic

  • Pacifica (Solana): hybrid design with off-chain matching and on-chain USDC deposits; 0.040% taker / 0.015% maker; 50x on BTC and ETH; about $881M of 24-hour volume on September 24, 2026, 97% of it in BTC, ETH and SOL. Points are live and no token has been announced. Closed-beta caps ($500k equity) are still in its docs. Pacifica review
  • Polymarket Perps: launched publicly on September 3, 2026; 89 markets (40 crypto, 39 stocks, 6 indices, 4 commodities) trading 24/7; 0.040% taker / 0.0125% maker; 50x on BTC, ETH, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 contracts. Matching and margin are off-chain, settlement on Polygon. Very new, with a restricted list that includes the US and Canada. Polymarket Perps review
  • dYdX: the longest-running decentralized perp chain (Cosmos-based dYdX Chain), 0.050% taker / 0.010% maker at tier 1, 78 active markets, 50x on BTC and ETH. Volume has shrunk to about $74M a day (September 24, 2026), so books are thinner than the leaders'. dYdX review
  • Antarctic: 0.050% / 0.020%, 100x on BTC and ETH and 500x on gold, about $402M of 24-hour volume on September 24, 2026. It works like an exchange account with off-chain matching; we found no audit, and DefiLlama shows a user warning about withdrawal delays. Size accordingly. Antarctic review

4. Live: top 10 perp DEXs by 24-hour volume

Liquidity is the product on a derivatives exchange: more volume and open interest mean tighter spreads, less slippage on large orders and funding rates that track the spot price. This table is rebuilt from CoinGecko's derivatives feed (converted to dollars with Hyperliquid's BTC price) every time the site is built, so it is at most a few hours old. For all tracked venues, fees and how to read reported vs normalized volume, see the full perp DEX ranking.

5. Best DEX by asset: Bitcoin, Ethereum, altcoins and meme coins

The picks above answer "which exchange"; this section answers "which exchange for the coin I trade". The short answer: Hyperliquid for Bitcoin, Ethereum and meme coins, because that is where the volume and open interest are; Aster if you want the longest altcoin list or the highest leverage; and Lighter if zero fees matter more than depth. Every figure below comes from each venue's public API, read at about 16:00 UTC on September 25, 2026 (a Friday): Hyperliquid metaAndAssetCtxs, Lighter orderBookDetails and exchangeStats, and Aster ticker/24hr, openInterest, exchangeInfo and its public leverage-bracket table. 24-hour volume moves a lot from day to day and is usually lower at weekends, so read the numbers as a snapshot, not a constant.

Bitcoin perpetuals: Hyperliquid

Pick: Hyperliquid. Its BTC perp traded $3.39B in 24 hours with $3.29B of open interest, roughly four times Lighter's BTC volume ($786M, $166M OI) and seven times Aster's ($489M, $493M OI). Leverage is 40x up to $150M of position notional and 20x above that. Funding is paid every hour and sat at the 0.00125%/hour baseline when we checked; over the 30 days to September 25 it added up to 0.7664% for longs, about $77 on a $10,000 position held the whole month.

The others win on narrower points. Lighter allows 50x and charges 0% on its Standard account, so a $50,000 BTC round trip with market orders costs $0 there, against $45 on Hyperliquid ($43.20 with code HOLYGRAIL) and $40 on Aster. Aster advertises 200x on BTCUSDT, but its public bracket table allows 200x only on the first $400 of notional, 150x up to $300,000 and 100x up to $800,000; in our order-book snapshot earlier the same day it was actually the cheapest of the three for a simulated $1M BTC market buy (about 0.4–0.5 bp above mid, against 0.8–1.0 bp on Hyperliquid and 0.9–1.4 bp on Lighter). We still pick Hyperliquid because it carries by far the most volume and open interest, which is what keeps books refilling when the market gaps, and because 40x is already more than a BTC position needs. More: Hyperliquid fees · Hyperliquid vs Lighter · Aster vs Hyperliquid.

Ethereum perpetuals: Hyperliquid

Pick: Hyperliquid. Its ETH perp had $2.95B of open interest, more than ten times Lighter's ($115M) and Aster's ($276M), on $1.04B of 24-hour volume (Lighter $273M, Aster $308M). In our order-book snapshot earlier that day, Hyperliquid showed $9.7–14.6M of ETH within 0.05% of the mid price, against $6.3–7.8M on Lighter and $3.0–3.4M on Aster. Leverage is the one area where Hyperliquid is behind: 25x up to $100M of notional (15x above), while Lighter allows 50x and Aster 200x on the first $400 and 150x up to $300,000. Above about 25x a 4% move against you wipes out the margin, so the lower cap rarely costs a sensible trader anything. On a 10 ETH round trip at a mark of $2,690 (about $26,900 of notional), market orders cost about $24.20 on Hyperliquid, $21.50 on Aster and $0 on Lighter's Standard account.

Altcoin perpetuals: Hyperliquid for depth, Aster for choice

Counting markets is where the three venues differ most. On September 25, 2026 Aster had 584 perps in trading status; it tags 133 of them as stocks, ETFs, commodities or other real-world assets, which leaves about 450 crypto perps, by far the longest list. Hyperliquid had 178 live perps (234 in its universe, 56 delisted), all crypto apart from PAXG (gold). Lighter had 210 active perps, of which 112 sit in its crypto risk bucket; the rest are stocks, indices, FX, commodities and pre-IPO markets.

Liquidity is far more concentrated. Hyperliquid's busiest altcoins that day were ZEC ($602M), HYPE ($554M), SOL ($459M), NEAR ($341M) and XRP ($234M). Lighter's were ZEC ($81M), SOL ($59M) and HYPE ($50M); Aster's were SOL ($124M), XRP ($83M), ZEC ($46M), ASTER ($45M) and HYPE ($28M). Leverage points the other way: Hyperliquid caps 144 of its 178 perps at 5x or less and only 32 altcoins reach 10x or more, while Aster offers at least 10x on about 118 crypto altcoins and 100x on SOL and XRP (first bracket only). Lighter sits in between, with 45 crypto altcoins at 10x or more and 25x on SOL.

  • Large and mid caps (SOL, XRP, HYPE, ZEC, NEAR and similar): Hyperliquid. The fee difference is smaller than the slippage you save.
  • A token only one venue lists, or more leverage on a mid cap: Aster, after checking the 24-hour volume on that exact market. Many of its 450 listings trade well under $1M a day.
  • Frequent small trades on liquid alts: Lighter Standard at 0% fees, accepting the 300 ms taker delay.

Meme coin perpetuals: Hyperliquid, with low leverage

Pick: Hyperliquid. By our count it lists 33 meme perps that together traded about $184M in 24 hours, more than Lighter's 18 (about $11M) and Aster's 58 "Meme"-tagged perps (about $49M) combined. Hyperliquid quotes the tiny-priced coins in thousands (kPEPE, kSHIB, kBONK, kFLOKI), as Aster and Lighter do with 1000PEPE and similar; one contract is 1,000 tokens. Leverage is deliberately low: 10x on DOGE, kPEPE, kSHIB, kBONK, FARTCOIN, TRUMP and PUMP, 5x on WIF, PENGU, SPX and kFLOKI, and 3x on the rest.

Public APIs, 16:00–16:04 UTC, September 25, 2026. Aster leverage is the first bracket of its public bracket table.

The honest caveats matter more for memes than for any other asset:

  • Leverage caps are a warning, not an obstacle. A 3x or 5x cap means the venue judges the book thin. Aster's 50–75x on DOGE, PEPE and PUMP sits on books a fraction of Hyperliquid's size; a meme that moves 2% in a minute liquidates a 50x position.
  • Delisting risk is real. Hyperliquid has delisted 56 of the 234 perps it has ever listed; validators vote on delistings, and open positions are settled rather than left open. In March 2025 the validators delisted JELLY after suspicious trading and settled positions at a set price. On the day we checked, Aster had 19 perps in "SETTLING" status and Lighter 25 inactive perps. Do not hold a large position in a small meme you cannot watch.
  • Funding is the real holding cost. Most memes on Hyperliquid were at the 0.00125%/hour baseline, but WIF was at 0.00569%/hour (about 4.5 times the baseline), and CASHCAT was at 0.01149%/hour, more than nine times the baseline (about 0.28% a day paid by longs). Check the funding column before holding a meme long overnight.
  • Use isolated margin and a stop on every meme position so one wick cannot drain the rest of the account.

6. Best spot swap DEXs

If you only want to swap one token for another, you do not need a derivatives exchange. Spot DEXs are automated market makers (AMMs): you trade against a pool of tokens supplied by liquidity providers, and the price moves along a formula as the pool's balance changes. The right one is mostly decided by which chain your tokens are on. None of these venues has a referral program with us, so the links below are plain links. Volumes are DefiLlama's 30-day totals, read September 27, 2026.

Uniswap

The largest spot DEX by a wide margin and the default for ERC-20 tokens. Version 3 introduced concentrated liquidity and fee tiers; version 4 lets pool creators set any fee and attach "hooks" that add custom logic such as dynamic fees. After the UNIfication governance vote, Uniswap Labs set its interface fee to zero in December 2025, and a protocol fee (one-sixth of the pool fee on v2) now applies on v2 pools and selected v3 pools. You still pay the pool fee and the chain's gas, so swapping on an L2 such as Arbitrum or Base is far cheaper than on Ethereum mainnet.

Jupiter

Jupiter is not a pool but an aggregator: it splits your order across Raydium, Orca, Meteora and other Solana venues to find the best price. Jupiter's Ultra swap fee schedule (developer docs, September 2026) lists 0 bps on stable-to-stable, LST-to-LST and some Jupiter-token purchases, 2 bps on SOL–stablecoin, 5 bps on LST–stablecoin, 10 bps on most other pairs and 50 bps on tokens less than 24 hours old; the fee is included in the quote you see. Jupiter has since moved developers to a newer Swap API, so check the fee line in your quote. Jupiter also runs a perps product, but it has no referral program for perps.

PancakeSwap

The main DEX on BNB Chain, with volume on 12 chains in total. V2 pools charge a flat 0.25%; v3 concentrated-liquidity pools on EVM chains use 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.25% or 1% tiers. BNB Chain's low gas makes it a cheap place to swap small amounts.

Aerodrome

The largest DEX on Base, built on the ve(3,3) model: liquidity providers who stake earn AERO emissions, and the swap fees their pools collect go to veAERO voters who direct those emissions. Fees are set per pool rather than by fixed tiers. It is the natural venue for Base-native tokens and for stablecoin swaps on Base.

Raydium

One of the main AMMs on Solana (third among Solana DEXs by 30-day volume on DefiLlama, read September 27, 2026, behind PumpSwap and BisonFi) and, through its LaunchLab launchpad, a common first home for new tokens. The default fee is 0.25% (AMM v4 pools charge only that), while concentrated-liquidity (CLMM) and CPMM pools offer tiers from 0.005%/0.01% up to 4%. On top of that you pay Solana's base fee (0.000005 SOL) and a priority fee that rises with congestion. New-token pools carry obvious risks: check the mint address and liquidity before you buy.

Hyperliquid spot

Hyperliquid also runs 336 spot pairs (as of October 20, 2026) on the same gas-free order book as its perps. Spot fees are higher than perp fees (0.070% taker at tier 0), but spot volume counts double toward the tier that sets your perp fees, and you can deposit native BTC, ETH and SOL and sell them for USDC without leaving the exchange.

Curve

Curve specializes in swaps between assets that should trade near the same price, such as USDC and USDT. According to Curve's docs, most Stableswap pools charge between 0.005% and 0.02%, and most pools now use dynamic fees that rise when a swap would unbalance the pool further; Cryptoswap pools for non-pegged assets charge from about 0.05% up to around 0.4%. DefiLlama shows $3.4B of 30-day volume across 21 chains (read September 27, 2026). It is the venue to check first for large stablecoin swaps.

SushiSwap

SushiSwap started in August 2020 as a fork of Uniswap and now pairs its AMM with an aggregator; SUSHI stakers (xSUSHI) receive part of the protocol fees. It is deployed on more than 30 chains on DefiLlama, but its 30-day volume is about $249M (read September 27, 2026), roughly 1/370 of Uniswap's. Many older comparison lists still feature it; today, compare its quote against the chain's larger DEXs before you swap.

Aggregators beyond Jupiter, such as 1inch and CoW Swap on Ethereum, do the same routing job on EVM chains. For how a pool prices a trade, see what is a DEX.

7. How to choose a DEX

Our ranking weighs four things, but in practice nine questions decide which DEX fits you, and the answer to the first one usually settles the rest. If the basics are new to you (wallets, self-custody, AMMs vs order books), read What is a DEX? first.

  1. What are you trading? Token swaps belong on a spot AMM or aggregator on the token's chain. Leveraged longs and shorts, or hedges, belong on a perp DEX. Stock and index exposure means edgeX, trade.xyz or Ondo Perps.
  2. Fees, all-in. Compare the taker fee if you use market orders and the maker fee if you rest limit orders. On spot DEXs add the pool fee, price impact and gas. On mobile apps add the builder fee. A 0.05% difference is $5 on every $10,000 you trade, so it compounds quickly for active traders.
  3. Liquidity. Deep books and pools mean less slippage. Check 24-hour volume and open interest in the live table, then look at the order book depth for your pair. A venue can be cheap on paper and expensive in practice if its book is thin.
  4. Leverage and risk controls. Higher leverage only helps if you understand liquidation. Look for isolated margin, stop-loss and take-profit orders and clear liquidation rules. For most traders 2–5x on majors is plenty.
  5. Markets. Does it list what you want to trade: long-tail altcoins, pre-launch tokens, US stocks, FX, commodities? Hyperliquid has the widest crypto list; edgeX and trade.xyz the widest stock lists.
  6. Custody and security. How are deposits held: a bridge contract, a rollup, a multisig? Is there a public audit? How long has it operated without a loss of user funds? Newer venues deserve smaller balances.
  7. KYC and restricted countries. No DEX in this guide asks for ID, but each one publishes a list of places it does not serve. Read the Terms before you deposit and never use a VPN to get around them.
  8. Chain, funding path and app. How will you get money in? Hyperliquid takes USDC from Arbitrum, Ethereum, Base and Polygon plus native BTC, ETH and SOL, and many centralized exchanges can withdraw to it directly. If you trade on a phone, check whether there is an app for your platform and what it costs on top.
  9. The hidden costs of a swap: slippage, MEV and gas. On an AMM the price moves as your trade eats into the pool (price impact), and the slippage tolerance you set is the worst price you accept. A loose tolerance on a public mempool invites a "sandwich": a bot buys just before your swap and sells just after it, pocketing the difference. Keep the tolerance tight, split large swaps, or use a router built to keep orders out of the public mempool, such as CoW Swap or 1inch's intent-based mode. Gas is paid on every on-chain swap and is far lower on L2s, BNB Chain and Solana than on Ethereum mainnet. On an order-book perp DEX such as Hyperliquid or Lighter there is no gas per order, and the book shows what a market order will cost before you send it. More: order book vs AMM · price impact and slippage.

8. Fee comparison: what a $10,000 market order costs

Base taker and maker fees for a new account, and the cost of a $10,000 market (taker) order before discounts. Perp DEXs charge no gas on orders; you pay network fees only when you deposit or withdraw. Rates were read from each venue's official fee page on September 24–25, 2026.

Two things stand out. First, the same Hyperliquid trade costs $4.50 on the Hyperliquid web app ($4.32 with the 4% referral discount) but $7.00 to $9.50 through a mobile app, because the app's builder fee is added on top. Second, zero-fee and very cheap venues make their money elsewhere: Lighter through Premium accounts and its token, trade.xyz through growth-mode incentives that can end. Compare with centralized exchanges in our DEX vs CEX fee comparison, or run your own numbers in the DEX fee calculator. What each code does on top of these rates: Hyperliquid referral code, Lighter referral code and Aster referral code.

9. Safety checklist before you deposit

  • Type the URL yourself or use a bookmark. Fake front-ends in search ads are the most common way traders lose funds. The official apps are app.hyperliquid.xyz, app.lighter.xyz, asterdex.com and pro.edgex.exchange.
  • Use a fresh trading wallet. Keep long-term savings in a hardware wallet, and fund a separate wallet with only what you plan to trade.
  • Never share your seed phrase. No exchange, support agent or airdrop needs it. A site that asks for it is a scam.
  • Read what you sign. Unlimited token approvals and "permit" signatures can drain a wallet. Revoke old approvals periodically.
  • Send a small test first. Check the chain and the minimum deposit (5 USDC on Hyperliquid; smaller deposits are lost) before moving the full amount.
  • Start with low leverage and isolated margin. Set a stop-loss on every position until you know how liquidation works on that venue.
  • Spread venue risk. Do not keep everything on one exchange, and keep less on newer or unaudited venues.
  • Check the Terms and your local rules. Make sure you are not in a restricted jurisdiction, and keep records for tax.

10. How to start trading on a DEX in 5 steps

  1. Get USDC. Buy USDC (or ETH, SOL or BTC) on an exchange you already use. Many centralized exchanges can withdraw USDC on Arbitrum, which is the cheapest route into Hyperliquid.
  2. Set up a wallet. Install Rabby, MetaMask or Phantom and write the seed phrase on paper. On Hyperliquid you can skip this and log in with email, which creates a wallet for you.
  3. Open the DEX through a referral link. Do it before you start trading: Hyperliquid stops accepting a code once your account passes $10,000 of volume, and a code cannot be changed once set. With app.hyperliquid.xyz/join/HOLYGRAIL the 4% discount applies automatically.
  4. Deposit. Connect the wallet, click Deposit, choose the chain and send at least 5 USDC. You pay gas only on the source chain; after that, orders cost no gas.
  5. Place a small first trade. Pick a market, set isolated margin and 2–3x leverage, use a limit order if you can (maker fees are a third of taker fees), and add a stop-loss. Withdraw with the Withdraw button when you are done.

How We Review Exchanges

01

Fees from the source

Every rate is copied from the exchange's published schedule or API and dated. Old numbers are corrected, not left to rot.

02

Volume & Liquidity

We check live volume and open interest from public APIs, and we say when a venue's volume looks incentive-driven. Thin markets are dangerous.

03

Security & Transparency

We look for audits, custody design, on-chain proofs and a named team, and we say plainly when we cannot find them.

04

Referral value, disclosed

We explain exactly what each referral program pays us and what it gives you, and we say when a code does nothing for you.

FAQ

Which DEX is considered the best in 2026?

For most traders it is Hyperliquid: the deepest on-chain order book, 178 perpetual markets (as of October 20, 2026) plus builder-deployed stock and commodity markets, gas-free orders, and 0.045% taker / 0.015% maker base fees (4% less with a referral code). If you only swap tokens rather than trade futures, the best DEX depends on the chain your tokens live on: Uniswap on Ethereum and its layer 2s, Jupiter on Solana, PancakeSwap on BNB Chain and Aerodrome on Base.

What are the top 5 DEXs?

Our top 5 for 2026 are Hyperliquid (best overall and best perp DEX, $217B of 30-day perp volume on DefiLlama), Lighter (0% fees on its Standard account), Aster (longest altcoin list and the highest leverage), Uniswap (the largest spot DEX, $92.2B in 30 days) and Jupiter (the best swap router on Solana, $15.5B routed). Volumes were read on September 27, 2026. The first three are for trading perpetual futures, the last two for swapping tokens.

What are the top 10 DEXs?

1. Hyperliquid, 2. Lighter, 3. Aster, 4. Uniswap, 5. Jupiter, 6. PancakeSwap, 7. edgeX, 8. Aerodrome, 9. Raydium, 10. Curve. We rank on liquidity (DefiLlama 30-day volume, read September 27, 2026), all-in fees from each venue's official docs, track record and custody, and ease of use. Perp DEXs and spot DEXs are listed together because searchers compare them, but pick by task: perps on 1–3 and 7, token swaps on the chain your tokens live on (4–6, 8–10).

What is the best decentralized exchange for perpetual futures?

Hyperliquid, by volume, open interest and depth. On September 25, 2026 it traded about $8.25B of perps in 24 hours with roughly $12.8B of open interest (Hyperliquid API). Lighter is the choice if you want zero fees, Aster if you want leverage above 100x or orders hidden from the book, and edgeX or trade.xyz if you want US stock perps. By asset, Hyperliquid is also our pick for Bitcoin, Ethereum and meme coin perps (it carried $3.39B of BTC and about $184M of meme-coin volume in 24 hours on September 25, 2026), while Aster has the longest altcoin list at about 450 crypto perps.

Which DEX has the lowest trading fees?

Lighter charges 0% maker and 0% taker on its default Standard account for perps and spot, in exchange for a slightly slower order queue (300 ms taker latency). Among fee-charging venues, trade.xyz markets in growth mode on Hyperliquid cost 0.009% taker, Ondo Perps 0.025% and Aster 0.04% taker with 0% maker. For spot swaps, pool fees start at 0.01% on Uniswap and PancakeSwap stablecoin pools, but the pool fee on volatile pairs is usually 0.25–0.30%.

What is the best perp DEX on Arbitrum?

It depends on whether you want a venue that settles on Arbitrum or the deepest order book you can fund from Arbitrum. On Arbitrum itself, DefiLlama's Arbitrum perps page (read October 6, 2026) counts $71.2B of 30-day perp volume, and Variational carries most of it ($65.9B), ahead of Aark ($1.8B), Gains Network ($1.69B) and GMX ($1.24B). GMX works differently from an order-book DEX: it is an oracle-priced pool exchange on Arbitrum, Avalanche and MegaETH with 0.04%–0.06% position fees and up to 100x leverage. If you hold USDC on Arbitrum, a deeper book is one deposit away: Hyperliquid accepts deposits from 5 USDC in native USDC on Arbitrum (not USDC.e) and withdraws back to Arbitrum for 0.2 USDC plus a tiny HyperEVM gas fee in HYPE, with 0.045% / 0.015% base fees and 4% off on your first $25M with code HOLYGRAIL. Lighter, Aster and edgeX also accept deposits from Arbitrum. Our pick is Hyperliquid funded from Arbitrum. If you want to stay on the chain, Variational is where most of the volume is; we point to GMX instead for its track record (the longest-running of the four, live on Arbitrum since 2021) and its oracle pricing, so a fill does not depend on order-book depth.

Which DEX is the biggest?

For derivatives, Hyperliquid: DefiLlama counted $217B of Hyperliquid perp volume over 30 days, 35% of the $626B traded on all perp DEXs (read September 27, 2026). For spot swaps, Uniswap: $92.2B across all versions in 30 days, followed by PancakeSwap at $29B (read September 27, 2026).

Is a DEX safer than a centralized exchange?

It removes one risk and adds others. On a DEX you keep custody: no company can freeze or lose your balance the way a failed exchange can. In return you carry smart-contract and bridge risk, you are responsible for your seed phrase, and there is no support desk that can reverse a mistaken transaction. Keep only trading capital on any venue, use a hardware wallet for savings, and prefer venues with long track records and public audits.

Do DEXs require KYC?

No. A DEX has no account in your name: you connect a wallet (or, on Hyperliquid, Aster and edgeX, an email login that creates one) and sign transactions yourself. That is not the same as being anonymous: every deposit and withdrawal is public on-chain, fiat on-ramps and centralized exchanges require ID, and taxes still apply. Every venue also publishes a restricted-persons list; you must not use a venue from a jurisdiction it excludes.

Can I use these DEXs from the United States?

Not the perp DEXs in this guide. Hyperliquid excludes US persons and residents of Ontario, Lighter and Aster exclude the US, Canada and the UK among others, edgeX excludes the US and Canada, and dYdX, Pacifica, Polymarket Perps and Antarctic also list the US. Spot DEX front-ends set their own terms, so read them before you connect. Do not use a VPN to get around a restriction: it breaks the terms and can get funds frozen in close-only mode.

What is the best DEX app for iPhone?

Hyperliquid has no official iOS app (its official app is on Android), so iPhone users either add the web app to the home screen or use a third-party Hyperliquid app. Based adds the smallest fee on top (0.025%, for 0.070% taker in total); Liquid and fomo add 0.05% but bundle more markets and a simpler interface. Orders placed through these apps carry the app's builder fee, but the referral discount also applies to orders placed through apps with a builder code: in apps you connect with the same wallet, such as Based and Liquid, a Hyperliquid code such as HOLYGRAIL still takes 4% off Hyperliquid's part of the fee (on-chain fills checked October 1, 2026). One catch: apps such as Phantom often set their own Hyperliquid referral code on accounts that have none, so enter a code on Hyperliquid before you start using an app. fomo is different: it has no wallet connection (Apple, Google or email only) and creates its own wallet and Hyperliquid account for you, so HOLYGRAIL cannot apply there; use fomo's own referral code instead.

Which DEX is best for trading US stocks?

For the cheapest fees, trade.xyz markets on Hyperliquid: 109 live stock, index, commodity and FX perps on September 25, 2026, at 0.009% taker in growth mode and up to 50x on the S&P 500 contract. edgeX lists 93 US stock and ETF perps alongside crypto, and Ondo Perps focuses on stock perps from the issuer of tokenized US securities. These are perpetual futures that track a price; you never own the underlying share.

What do I get from a referral code, and does it cost me anything?

A referral code never raises your fees. What you get depends on the venue: Hyperliquid gives 4% off your fees on your first $25M of volume (code HOLYGRAIL), Lighter rebates your first week of Premium fees, Liquid takes 10% off its own fee, fomo gives 10% off, and Ondo Perps gives 5% off. Based, edgeX and Aster publish no fixed benefit for the referred user. We earn a share of the fees you pay, which is how this site is funded.

Disclosure: we hold referral codes for Hyperliquid (HOLYGRAIL), Lighter (718610TD), Aster (DTLpLc), edgeX (HOLYGRAIL), Based (HOLYGRAIL), Liquid (JV2EN2CX), fomo (DailyWiseKite) and Ondo Perps (AGHSGT), and earn a share of referred accounts' fees. It never raises your fees and does not change our picks. Leveraged trading can lose more than you expect; nothing here is financial advice.
