What is specific to gold on Hyperliquid
Gold on Hyperliquid is mostly one market: xyz:GOLD, which the app shows as GOLD-USDC with an xyz tag. trade.xyz deployed it on its HIP-3 dex, and it references 1 troy ounce of gold at the USD spot price (XAU/USD). Next to it sit two smaller instruments that people often confuse with it, and behind it a list of older gold markets that no longer trade. This section covers what a gold trader on Hyperliquid actually runs into: the fee rule that singles gold out, the three gold instruments, how quiet the weekend book has been, the daily maintenance hour and how gold's ordinary daily moves compare with the leverage on offer.
The fee rule that singles gold out
Most trade.xyz markets run in growth mode, a HIP-3 setting that cuts the all-in fee by 90% or more. Gold cannot. Both fee pages list crypto perps, crypto baskets, crypto wrappers such as MSTR, and gold as ineligible, and trade.xyz gives the reason in plain words: a gold perp already exists on the validator dex through PAXG. The result is that a market order on xyz:GOLD pays 0.09% at the entry tier, roughly 10 times the taker rate of a growth-mode market on the same deployer, silver included. For someone who trades in and out during the day, that difference outweighs funding by a wide margin, so resting limit orders matter more here than on almost any other trade.xyz market. The fee section below is rebuilt from the API on every build; if trade.xyz or Hyperliquid ever changed the rule, the table would show it before this paragraph does.
Three gold instruments, one account
xyz:GOLD follows the spot price of an ounce of gold, published by trade.xyz's relayer from liquid spot markets while they are open. PAXG is a different contract: a perpetual on the validator-operated dex whose reference is the Paxos Gold token, backed by one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold and priced from crypto exchanges at all hours. The third, XAUT0/USDC, is a spot pair for bridged Tether Gold; it averaged about $255,819 a day over the 30 days to October 19, a small fraction of the perps, and as spot it carries no leverage.
Because PAXG never pauses, it is a useful check on the gold perp at the weekend. Over the 90 UTC days from July 22 to October 19, 2026, the hourly marks of the two differed by 0.125% on average, both in hours with external gold prices and at weekends, and the largest gap was 0.374% on weekdays and 0.41% at a weekend. The difference that does matter is size: xyz:GOLD averaged $76.3M a weekday against $3.7M for PAXG, about 21 times as much, and it allows 25x where PAXG stops at 10x. PAXG pays the lower validator-dex fee; xyz:GOLD has the deeper book. Both share one USDC balance in a unified account, which is why some traders hold one against the other.
Old gold markets still show up in search
Several HIP-3 deployers listed their own gold perp in the past: Felix, Ventuals (a GOLDJM market), HyENA, both Kinetiq dexes and dreamcash. All 6 are delisted today, yet some of their market pages are still indexed and still quote old leverage figures. If a ticker other than xyz:GOLD or PAXG comes up, check its tag before depositing anything.
Weekends have been quiet, the reopen less so
From Friday's close to Sunday evening there is no external gold price, so the oracle follows the xyz:GOLD book itself inside ±4% bounds that can re-anchor 2 times per direction. In theory that allows a weekend move of about +12.5% or −11.5%. In practice, over the 13 weekends we measured, the price drifted by 0.26% on average from Friday's last external hour to Sunday's last internal hour, and never more than 0.87%. Weekend days averaged a range of 0.46% against 2.07% on weekdays, on about 18% of a weekday's volume.
The first hour after external prices return on Sunday has moved about as much as the whole weekend: 0.25% on average, at most 0.56%. That is the moment the perp snaps back to wherever spot gold trades when the new week opens, and a stop placed on Saturday has to survive it. A weekend book this thin also means a single large order can move the internal price more than it would on a Tuesday.
The maintenance hour, Monday to Thursday
trade.xyz's spec rows give every commodity and index market a daily maintenance window, gold included: 5–6 PM ET, Monday to Thursday. It lines up with the break in the external session, and in UTC the daily 5-6 PM ET gap is 21:00-22:00 UTC until November 1, 2026, then 22:00-23:00 UTC. During that hour the oracle switches to internal pricing exactly as it does at the weekend, so liquidations and triggers work off the book's own price. For traders in Asia this hour falls in the early morning, which is when an unattended position is most likely to meet it.
Gold's ordinary moves against 25x
Gold moves less than crypto, which tempts people into the maximum. Measured over the same quarter, the daily close-to-close change had a standard deviation of 1.25%. The price fell at least 2% below the day's open on 8 days and rose at least that far on 9, and 2% is roughly where an isolated position at 25x is liquidated. On 17 days out of 90, then, a full-leverage position opened at the daily open in the wrong direction would not have reached the close. The estimate below lets you try your own size and leverage against the live margin table.
