DEX leverage tiers comparison: a leverage dial and lever above tier steps that narrow as position size grows

The highest max leverage on a DEX is 1001x (Aster’s Shield Mode and 1001x mode), followed by Jupiter Perps at 250x, edgeX and GMX at 100x, Lighter and dYdX at 50x and Hyperliquid at 40x on BTC (checked October 14, 2026). Those caps apply mainly to BTC and ETH, and on tiered venues only to small positions: Aster’s order book allows 150x up to $300,000, edgeX 100x up to $1M, Hyperliquid 40x up to $150M, while Lighter keeps 50x at any size. Most altcoins are far lower everywhere: 144 of Hyperliquid’s 178 perps are capped at 5x or 3x, 165 of Lighter’s 213 at 10x or less, and 543 of Aster’s 604 at 20x or less.

Short version. Highest headline: Aster (Shield Mode to 1001x; order book 150x to $300,000). Highest on a $1M BTC position: edgeX (100x). Same leverage at every size: Lighter (50x BTC/ETH) and dYdX. Most room before liquidation at max, deepest book: Hyperliquid (40x BTC, 1.25% maintenance). Trade with code HOLYGRAIL on Hyperliquid for 4% off fees.

Figures you will see elsewhere that are out of date

  • “Hyperliquid 50x” — BTC is 40x and ETH 25x in Hyperliquid’s own margin-tier docs and API. 50x exists only on a few builder-deployed HIP-3 markets (trade.xyz SP500 50x).
  • “dYdX 20–25x” — BTC-USD and ETH-USD have a 2% initial margin fraction, which is 50x; SOL is 20x.
  • “Lighter 20x” — the maximum is 50x. 20x is only the default a new BTC or ETH position starts at.
  • “Aster 200x on everything” — 6 symbols start at 200x, and only for a first bracket of $400 or less; 543 of 604 are capped at 20x or less.
  • “APX 1001x” — APX is Aster’s former name: Aster’s changelog says “Astherus & APX have evolved into Aster”, and APX tokens were exchanged for ASTER from September 2025.

3. How leverage tiers work

Three numbers define leverage on a perp exchange. The initial margin rate is the collateral needed to open (1 ÷ leverage: 2% for 50x). The maintenance margin rate is the level where liquidation starts. And the tier table says how both change as your position grows. Tiers exist because a big position is harder to liquidate without moving the market, so the exchange asks for a thicker cushion.

Most tiered venues use the formula Binance popularised, which Hyperliquid documents explicitly: maintenance margin = notional × maintenance rate − maintenance deduction. The deduction makes the requirement continuous, so crossing a tier only raises the rate on the part of the position above the threshold. Example on Hyperliquid BTC: the 20x tier starts at $150M with a 2.5% rate (versus 1.25%), so the deduction is $1.9M. A $200M position needs $200M × 2.5% − $1.9M = $3.1M of maintenance margin, an effective 1.56%. Aster works the same way: a $1M BTCUSDT position sits in the 75x bracket (0.66%) with a cumulative deduction of $1,792, so it needs $6,600 − $1,792 = $4,808 (0.48%).

Two venues in this comparison use a different idea. dYdX and GMX tie margin to the market’s total open interest instead of your own size, so leverage can fall even when your position is small. And two venues have no tiers at all: Lighter and Jupiter set one requirement per market.

Hyperliquid documentation Margin tiers page
Hyperliquid’s official Margin tiers doc (September 25, 2026): max leverage steps down as position notional grows — the source for the Hyperliquid tier table in this section.

Hyperliquid’s tiers are generous for everyone except whales: the first BTC tier covers positions up to $150M. The limiting factor for ordinary traders is the per-market maximum. Of the 178 live perps on October 14, 2026, BTC was the only market at 40x and ETH the only one at 25x; SOL and XRP were 20x, 30 markets 10x, 56 markets 5x and 88 markets 3x. Builder-deployed HIP-3 markets have their own caps — on trade.xyz, SP500 50x, XYZ100 30x, NVDA and TSLA 20x and 82 markets, mostly single stocks, at 10x.

Three rules from the docs matter in practice. Maintenance margin is half the initial margin at the tier’s maximum leverage, from 1.25% (40x) to 16.7% (3x). Leverage is checked only when a position is opened, so a later price move does not force you to add margin until maintenance is breached. And liquidations go to the order book first: for a position above 100,000 USDC only 20% is sent to the book at first, followed by a 30-second cooldown, and only below two-thirds of maintenance does the HLP liquidator vault take over. Details: cross vs isolated margin, how to calculate a liquidation price.

Hyperliquid max leverage by asset

For everyone below whale size the number that counts is each market’s maximum leverage, which Hyperliquid returns in the maxLeverage field of its public meta endpoint. 56 delisted markets aside, this is how the 178 live perps split on October 14, 2026, with each bucket’s share of 24-hour perp volume at the same time (about 15:45 UTC, October 14, 2026, a Wednesday):

Two things stand out. First, 144 of the 178 markets (81%) cap you at 5x or less, yet on October 14 they produced under 6% of the day’s volume; the four markets at 20x or more produced about 76%. The “high leverage DEX” reputation comes from BTC and ETH alone. Second, because maintenance margin follows the market’s cap rather than your setting, the same 10x is much tighter on an altcoin. A $10,000 BTC long at 10x posts $1,000 and is liquidated when equity falls to 1.25% of notional ($125), after roughly a 8.75% drop. The same $10,000 HYPE long at 10x must keep 5% ($500), so it is liquidated after roughly a 5% drop.

If you run a bot, read maxLeverage and marginTableId from meta at startup and set a per-symbol ceiling below it; a global “20x” setting will be rejected on 174 markets.

Open interest caps and “order would exceed” errors

Margin tiers cap your position; Hyperliquid also caps each market’s total open interest. For validator-run perps the cap is not published as a number: the API call perpsAtOpenInterestCap only lists which markets are at it. At 04:57 UTC on October 19, 2026 that list held only delisted markets (CANTO, FTM, JELLY, LOOM, RLB, VINE, ZEREBRO), so no live market was capped. HIP-3 markets publish their caps through perpDexLimits: trade.xyz’s total open-interest cap was $10B on October 15, 2026, with a separate cap per asset. When a market hits its cap you can still close, but not add. These are the rejections you will see, with their exact texts from the docs:

5. Lighter max leverage: one margin fraction per market

Lighter publishes three fractions per market — initial (IMR), maintenance (MMR) and close-out (CMR) — and applies them at every position size. BTC and ETH are 2% / 1.2% / 0.8% (50x). Maintenance is always 60% of the initial margin and close-out 40%. No tiers means a $10M BTC position gets the same 50x as a $1,000 one — more than any tiered venue offers at that size. The trade-off shows in liquidation: accounts below maintenance enter partial liquidation (orders cancelled, IOC orders sent, up to a 1% fee to the LLP insurance pool), and below the close-out margin the LLP takes the positions over. Standard accounts pay 0% trading fees, so leverage on Lighter mostly costs funding, paid every 1 hour. More: Lighter review.

Lighter max leverage by market

Lighter’s public orderBookDetails endpoint returns each market’s min_initial_margin_fraction in basis points: 200 means a 2% minimum initial margin, so 50x. On October 14, 2026 the 213 active perps split like this (IMR / MMR / CMR, and each bucket’s share of 24-hour volume at about 15:45 UTC on October 14, 2026):

Source: Lighter API orderBookDetails (mainnet.zklighter.elliot.ai), October 14, 2026, and docs “Contract Specifications”. Where the docs table and the API differ, the API is the live value.

At maximum leverage the move that starts partial liquidation is 40% of the initial margin rate — about 0.8% on a 50x market, 1.6% at 25x, 2% at 20x, 4% at 10x and 13.3% at 3x. The API also carries a lower default: 20x for BTC and ETH and about 15x for SOL, HYPE and XRP, so a new BTC position does not start at 50x unless you raise it.

Worked example (isolated, 0.1 BTC at a $100,000 entry = $10,000 notional, MMR 1.2%). Partial liquidation starts when the position’s equity falls below 1.2% of notional, which gives a liquidation price of about entry × (1 − margin rate) ÷ (1 − MMR):

LeverageMargin postedApprox. liquidation priceAdverse move
50x$200≈ $99,1900.8%

5x$2,000≈ $80,97019%

Same coin, two venues: Hyperliquid vs Lighter

If you trade a specific coin, compare its cap directly. Lighter is equal or higher on every market we checked and never steps down with size; Hyperliquid has the deeper books and far more altcoin volume (October 14, 2026, both APIs):

6. Aster: leverage brackets, Shield Mode and 1001x

Aster has three ways to trade with leverage, and the famous numbers belong to different ones.

  • Pro (order book) uses size brackets. Its docs say maintenance margin “is based on the total size of your position rather than the leverage you select”.
  • Shield Mode runs from 20x to 1001x, with funding every hour and either a flat 0.03% fee or a 15%–20% share of profits. A position is closed automatically once its profit reaches 50,000 USDT on BTC or ETH.
  • 1001x mode reaches 1001x on BTC/USD, 250x on ETH/USD, 75x on other crypto and 200x on forex. From 500x up there is no opening fee, but you cannot add margin and net profit is capped at about 500% ROI (300% at 1001x).

$12M – $70M25x2.00%

Source: Aster public leverage-bracket data, October 14, 2026 (13 brackets in total, down to 1x above $1.2B). ETHUSDT uses the same brackets up to $12M.

Other markets start lower: SOLUSDT is 100x up to $50,000 and 75x up to $400,000; XRPUSDT starts at 100x; HYPEUSDT allows 300x on the first $1,000. Across the 604 tradable symbols the first-bracket maximum was 300x for 1, 200x for 6, 100x for 7, 50x–75x for 47, 20x for 141, 10x for 64 and 5x or less for 338. So “200x on Aster” is real, but it is a $400 position. Liquidation on Pro cancels your open orders, sends one large IOC order and hands any remainder to the insurance fund at the bankruptcy price. Fees, modes and examples: Aster 1001x and leverage guide.

7. edgeX risk tiers

edgeX publishes a risk-tier list per contract in its public metadata. On October 14, 2026, BTC allowed 100x up to $1M of position value (0.5% maintenance), 75x to $3M, 50x to $5M, 25x to $20M, 20x to $30M, 10x to $40M, 8x to $50M and 6x above. ETH was 100x to $800,000, SOL 75x to $500,000, gold (XAU) and USD/JPY 50x to $300,000, and HYPE, XRP and BNB 30x to $300,000. Of 187 tradable contracts, 132 capped at 10x, including 90 of its 98 US stock perps (the other 8 were 20x). edgeX charges a 1% liquidation fee. Full review: edgeX.

8. dYdX: margin that rises with open interest

dYdX v4 uses an initial margin fraction (IMF) and a maintenance margin fraction (MMF) per market. On October 14, 2026 the indexer showed BTC-USD and ETH-USD at IMF 2% / MMF 1.2% (50x), SOL-USD at 20x, 27 markets at 10x (including XRP) and 43 at 5x (including HYPE), 73 in total. For most markets the IMF is open-interest based: it stays at the base rate until the market’s total open notional reaches a lower cap, then rises linearly to 100% at an upper cap, while the MMF stays fixed. SOL’s caps were $40M and $100M. BTC and ETH had no cap set, so they stay at 50x. See Hyperliquid vs dYdX.

9. GMX and Jupiter: pool-based leverage

  • GMX advertises up to 100x. Its docs say the maximum allowed leverage of a pool decreases as the pool’s total open interest increases. Liquidation happens when remaining collateral falls below a minimum of 0.25%–1% of position size, depending on the market. Gold, silver, WTI and Brent allow 100x during market hours and 25x off-hours; natural gas 40x and 20x; QQQ and SPY 50x and 25x. The switch to off-hours can pull your liquidation price closer without any price change.
  • Jupiter Perps allows 1.1x to 250x on SOL, ETH and wBTC against the JLP pool, with an in-app warning above 150x. Its liquidation formula uses a 500x protocol limit (a 0.2% maintenance level) plus the estimated closing fee, and borrow fees move the liquidation price over time. Its Beta order-book markets (JUP, HYPE, ZEC and three stock perps) are capped lower, at 20x each.

Pool-based venues charge a fee to open and again to close (GMX 0.04%–0.06%, Jupiter 0.06%) plus hourly borrow fees, so high leverage there costs more than on an order book. Comparisons: Hyperliquid vs GMX, Hyperliquid vs Jupiter.

10. Other high-leverage venues

Three smaller venues also advertise high caps; gTrade’s 1000x on forex majors is the closest anyone comes to Aster’s 1001x. They use a pool or synthetic model rather than an order book, and we hold no referral code with any of them:

11. DEX vs CEX max leverage

Centralized exchanges are often assumed to offer more leverage. On the majors that is no longer true: Bybit’s API caps BTCUSDT at 150x (many pages still say 125x), below Aster’s Shield Mode and Jupiter, while the order-book DEXs most people use sit at 40x–100x. Binance and Bitget also stop at 150x on BTCUSDT, and only for the first 300,000 USDT and 200,000 USDT of position value; OKX’s BTC-USDT perpetual is 100x (public APIs, October 14, 2026).

Below $300,000 Aster offers the most order-book leverage; around $1M edgeX does; from about $12M up the untiered venues (Lighter and dYdX at 50x) and Hyperliquid’s wide first tier (40x to $150M) offer more than Aster or edgeX. For any realistic retail size, maximum leverage is not the constraint — the liquidation distance is.

13. Liquidation distance: 10x to 1001x

A $10,000 BTC long in isolated margin, at each venue’s maximum leverage and at 10x. The distance is initial margin minus maintenance margin, before trading fees and funding.

Venue, leverageInitial marginMaintenance marginMove to liquidationSame trade at 10x
Hyperliquid, 40x$250 (2.5%)$125 (1.25%)≈ 1.25%≈ 8.75%
Lighter, 50x$200 (2%)$120 (1.2%)≈ 0.8% (LLP takeover at ≈ 1.2%)≈ 8.8%
Aster Pro, 150x$66.67 (0.67%)$33 (0.33%)≈ 0.34%≈ 9.7%
edgeX, 100x$100 (1%)$50 (0.5%)≈ 0.5%≈ 9.5%
dYdX, 50x$200 (2%)$120 (1.2%)≈ 0.8%≈ 8.8%
Jupiter Perps, 250x$40 (0.4%)$20 (0.2%)< 0.2% (maintenance + close fee)—

Approximate; exact liquidation prices also depend on fees already paid, funding, the mark price and, in cross margin, the rest of your account. Hyperliquid’s formula: liq_price = price − side × margin_available ÷ position_size ÷ (1 − l × side).

How risky is 100x or 1001x? At 100x the whole margin is 1% of the position and liquidation comes after about 0.5%. At 1001x the margin is 0.1% of the position — about $9.99 on a $10,000 trade — so ordinary tick-to-tick noise can close it. At 10x the difference between venues almost disappears (8.8%–9.7% on BTC), because initial margin dominates. That is the practical lesson of leverage tiers: the venue’s maximum matters far less than the leverage you choose. Use the liquidation price calculator to compute your own level and the position sizing guide to size trades.

14. Best DEX for leverage trading, by use

  • BTC and ETH, 10–40x, any size to millions: Hyperliquid — 40x BTC / 25x ETH, the widest liquidation buffer at max and the deepest DEX order books (fees, code HOLYGRAIL).
  • 50x at any size, zero trading fees: Lighter — the same cap on $1,000 and $10M, and higher alt caps than Hyperliquid on most coins.
  • Above 50x on a small position: Aster (code DTLpLc) — 150x to $300,000 on the order book, Shield Mode to 1001x — or edgeX for 100x up to $1M. Only with a hard stop: the liquidation distance is 0.5% or less.
  • Altcoins: expect 3–20x almost everywhere. Lighter beats Hyperliquid on most coins we compared; Aster and edgeX go higher on a few mid-caps at small size, and Aster lists the most alts at 20x.
  • A personal cap per market: write down the exchange maximum and your own ceiling for every market you trade (for example half the cap on majors, lower on 3–5x alts), a maximum notional per symbol as a share of equity, and a limit on total open risk so five correlated 10x alts do not add up to one 50x bet.
  • Large positions ($10M+): check the tier table before you size up — Aster drops to 25x above $12M and edgeX to 20x above $20M, while Hyperliquid stays at 40x to $150M.

15. FAQ

Which DEX has the highest max leverage?

Aster: up to 1001x in Shield Mode (minimum 20x) and 1001x on BTC/USD in its 1001x mode, as of October 14, 2026. On its regular order book Aster allows 200x only up to $400 and 150x up to $300,000. Next come Jupiter Perps (250x on SOL, ETH and wBTC), edgeX (100x on BTC up to $1M), GMX (up to 100x), Lighter and dYdX (50x) and Hyperliquid (40x on BTC).

Is 1000x leverage possible on a DEX?

Yes, on a few products: Aster’s Shield Mode reaches 1001x and its 1001x mode 1001x on BTC/USD, and gTrade offers 1000x on forex majors and 500x on its “DEGEN” crypto pairs. At 1001x your whole margin is about 0.1% of the position, so a move of less than 0.1% against you ends the trade. In Aster’s 1001x mode, positions at 500x and above cannot take extra margin and net profit is capped at roughly 300% ROI at 1001x. No order-book DEX offers anything close on a large position: Aster Pro drops to 50x at $3M.

How risky is 100x leverage?

Very. At 100x the initial margin is 1% of the position, and liquidation starts before the full 1% is lost: on edgeX BTC (maintenance 0.5%) a move of about 0.5% against you liquidates the position, and BTC often moves that much within minutes. At 10x the same trade survives a move of roughly 9.5%. Use high leverage only with a small position and a hard stop.

Which DEX is best for leverage trading?

It depends on what you trade. For BTC and ETH with the deepest order book and the most room before liquidation at maximum leverage, Hyperliquid (40x BTC, 25x ETH). For the same 50x at any size and 0% Standard fees, Lighter. For the highest leverage on small positions, Aster (150x on its order book, up to 1001x in Shield Mode). For 100x on BTC up to $1M, edgeX.

What are DEX leverage tiers?

Leverage tiers (margin tiers, risk brackets) lower the maximum leverage as a position grows and raise the maintenance margin with it. On Hyperliquid, BTC allows 40x up to $150M of notional and 20x above. On Aster, BTCUSDT allows 200x only up to $400, 150x up to $300,000 and 50x from $3M to $12M. Lighter has no size tiers: BTC is 50x at any size.

What are Hyperliquid’s leverage tiers and max leverage by asset?

On October 14, 2026 Hyperliquid listed 178 live perps: BTC 40x (20x above $150M of notional), ETH 25x (15x above $100M), SOL and XRP 20x, 30 markets at 10x (including HYPE, ZEC, DOGE and BNB; 5x above $3M or $20M), 56 at 5x and 88 at 3x. Maintenance margin is half the initial margin at the tier’s maximum, from 1.25% on BTC to 16.7% on 3x markets. It is 40x, not the 50x many sites still quote.

What is the maximum leverage on Lighter?

50x on BTC and ETH (and on US500, SPY and FX majors), 30x on US100 and QQQ, 25x on SOL, gold and silver, 20x on 25 markets including HYPE, XRP, ZEC and BNB, 15x on DOGE, NEAR, UNI, ARB and OP, 10x on 84 markets and 3x–8x on the rest (API, October 14, 2026). The cap does not fall with size. A new BTC position starts at 20x by default, which is why some sites say “20x”; you can raise it to 50x.

How far can price move before I am liquidated?

Roughly the initial margin rate minus the maintenance margin rate, before fees and funding. For BTC at maximum leverage: about 1.25% on Hyperliquid (40x), 0.8% on Lighter and dYdX (50x), 0.5% on edgeX (100x) and 0.34% on Aster Pro (150x). At 10x it is about 8.8%–9.7% on BTC, but only about 5% on a Hyperliquid altcoin whose maximum is 10x. Cross margin uses your whole balance, so the real distance is usually larger.

Does a higher leverage setting change my maintenance margin?

Not on these venues. Maintenance margin is set by the market and, on tiered venues, by your position size — not by the leverage you choose. Choosing lower leverage posts more collateral, which moves the liquidation price further away. On Hyperliquid, cross-margin liquidation prices do not depend on the leverage setting at all; they depend on the account’s total collateral.
