Hyperliquid minimum order size and DEX minimum trade size comparison: a small coin at the minimum threshold

Hyperliquid’s minimum order size is $10 of notional value per perp order, on every market. Spot orders need at least 10 USDC, a TWAP needs $100 in total, and the minimum USDC deposit is 5 USDC. An order below the floor is rejected with “Order must have minimum value of $10.” In coins that is 0.00013 BTC at current prices, not 0.001 BTC. Lighter also uses $10 on every market; Aster uses 5 USDT, but BTC needs at least 0.001 BTC (about $82.07); edgeX starts at 0.001 BTC (about $82).

Quick answers.
Hyperliquid: $10 per perp order · 10 USDC per spot order · TWAP $100 total, $10 per suborder · deposit 5 USDC · withdrawal 0.2 USDC + gas.
Lighter: $10 on all 210 perps · deposit $5 ($3 top-ups) · 0% fees on Standard.
Aster: 5 USDT on all 585 perps; BTC 0.001 BTC ≈ $82.07.
edgeX: 0.001 BTC · 0.03 ETH · 0.5 SOL · deposit 10 USDC.

1. Hyperliquid minimum order size by pair

Hyperliquid applies one rule to all 178 of its perp markets (as of October 20, 2026): an order must be worth at least $10. What differs by pair is the size step, set by the asset’s szDecimals: sizes are rounded to that many decimals. The smallest valid order is therefore the first size step that is worth $10 or more at the current price. The table works it out at the mark prices of October 20, 2026, refreshed every time this site rebuilds.

PairSize step (szDecimals)Mark priceSmallest order that clears $10Its valueMax leverageMargin at max leverageMargin at 5x

Size steps from Hyperliquid’s info API (meta, checked September 26, 2026); prices and maximum leverage from metaAndAssetCtxs at October 20, 2026. Margin = size × mark price ÷ leverage, the formula in Hyperliquid’s margining docs. The coin amount you need moves with the price; the $10 floor does not.

Two things follow. First, the dollar rule always binds on Hyperliquid: every size step is worth far less than $10, so you will never hit a coin minimum before the $10 floor. Lists that give “0.001 BTC” or “0.01 ETH” as Hyperliquid’s minimum overstate it several times over: 0.001 BTC is about $82.07 and 0.01 ETH about $24.12. Second, leverage lowers the margin, not the minimum: at 40x, a $10 BTC order ties up about $0.27, but it is still a $10 order.

HIP-3 markets (stocks, commodities and indices deployed by builders, such as trade.xyz) run on the same HyperCore order books, so they follow the same rules. Example, from the API on September 26, 2026: xyz:NVDA has a size step of 0.001 (szDecimals 3) and 20x maximum leverage; at $224.59, the smallest order that clears $10 was 0.045 NVDA ($10.11), needing about $0.51 of margin at 20x. See trade.xyz stock perps.

2. Spot, TWAP, scale orders and the exact error messages

  • Perps: every order must be worth at least $10. Too small, and the API returns MinTradeNtl: “Order must have minimum value of $10.”
  • Spot: at least 10 units of the quote token, 10 USDC on USDC pairs. The error is MinTradeSpotNtl: “Order must have minimum value of 10 {quote_token}.”
  • Limit and trigger orders: the value is size × the order’s own price. A limit buy far below the market needs more coins to reach $10 than a market order does.
  • TWAP: at least $100 in total, and each suborder must still be worth at least $10 (Hyperliquid announcement, “TWAP order improvements”). So a $100 TWAP can be cut into at most 10 suborders; larger orders or longer running times get more. Running time is 5 minutes to 7 days. See Hyperliquid TWAP and iceberg orders.
  • Scale orders: a scale order places several limit orders across a price range, and each one is an ordinary order that must clear $10. Five rungs therefore need at least $50; ten rungs, $100.
  • Positions under $10: the official error list has no exception for closing a position smaller than $10. Third-party developer guides say a reduce-only order that closes the entire position is accepted; we could not confirm it in Hyperliquid’s docs, so avoid partial closes that leave a remainder under $10. See partial closes and scaling out.
  • Price ticks: prices can have up to 5 significant figures (so $1 steps on BTC near its current price, $0.1 on ETH). A price with too many digits is rejected, not rounded.
  • Spot dust: spot balances below one lot and worth $1 or less are swept daily at 00:00 UTC unless you opt out.

3. How to check any pair’s minimum

In the app: open the market, switch the size unit to USDC in the order form and type 10. The Order Value line shows the notional; if you type a coin amount instead, the form rounds it to the pair’s size step.

From the API: send POST https://api.hyperliquid.xyz/info with the body {"type":"meta"}. Each asset in universe has a szDecimals and a maxLeverage. The smallest valid size is 10 ÷ price, rounded up to szDecimals decimals. For HIP-3 markets add the dex name, for example {"type":"meta","dex":"xyz"}. More in our Hyperliquid API guide.

4. Margin needed for a $10 order

The margin required to open a position is size × mark price ÷ leverage. For a $10 order:

Leverage1x2x3x5x10x20x25x40x
Margin for a $10 order$10.00$5.00$3.33$2.00$1.00$0.50$0.40$0.25

Maximum leverage depends on the coin: 40x BTC, 25x ETH, 20x SOL, 10x HYPE, 20x XRP, 10x DOGE at October 20, 2026.

Add the fee (a $10 market order costs $0.0045 at the base 0.045% taker rate, $0.0015 as a 0.015% maker) and a buffer: at high leverage a small move takes you to the liquidation price. Read how the liquidation price is calculated and cross vs isolated margin before using 20x on a small account.

5. Hyperliquid deposit and withdrawal minimums

  • USDC deposits: minimum 5 USDC; smaller deposits can be lost. Guide: Hyperliquid deposit guide.
  • Native coins through Unit: 0.0003 BTC (≈ $24.62), 0.007 ETH (≈ $16.88), 0.12 SOL (≈ $12.63). Unit says transactions below these amounts cannot be processed.
  • Withdrawals: a flat 0.2 USDC fee plus a tiny HyperEVM gas fee in HYPE (how to withdraw).
  • First transfer to a new address: sending to a HyperCore account that has never been used costs 1 USDC as an activation fee.

Minimums read from each exchange’s public API and docs on September 26, 2026. Dollar values use Hyperliquid mark prices at October 20, 2026 and move with the market. Taker fees at each venue’s base tier: Hyperliquid 0.045%, Aster 0.04%, edgeX 0.045%, dYdX 0.05%, Pacifica 0.040%, Polymarket Perps 0.040%, Lighter Standard 0%, Paradex retail UI 0%.

7. Notional minimum vs lot size: which one binds

Exchanges use two different rules, and the one that binds is whichever gives the larger order:

  • A minimum notional (order value in dollars): $10 on Hyperliquid, Lighter, Paradex, Pacifica and Polymarket Perps; 5 USDT on Aster.
  • A minimum quantity or lot size (in coins): 0.001 BTC on Aster, 0.001 BTC on edgeX, one step of 0.0001 BTC on dYdX.

When a coin is expensive, a coarse lot overrides a low notional minimum. That is why Aster’s 5 USDT rule becomes about $82.07 on BTC. Of Aster’s 585 trading perps, 14 had a minimum quantity worth more than $10 on September 26, 2026, mostly BTC contracts and stock or pre-IPO perps (ANTHROPICUSDT, for example, about $20). On venues with fine lots (Hyperliquid, Lighter, Paradex, Pacifica) the dollar rule always binds. Every venue also has a maximum: Polymarket Perps caps a BTC market order at $1M and a limit order at $5M.

8. Lighter minimum order: $10 on every market, free on Standard

Lighter’s minimum order is $10 on all 210 active perp markets (API, September 26, 2026). The minimum coin amounts (0.00007 BTC, 0.0020 ETH, 0.055 SOL, 0.07 HYPE) are each worth $5–7, so the $10 value rule is what you hit. Lighter Standard accounts pay 0% maker and 0% taker, so a $10 Lighter trade carries no exchange fee (Paradex’s retail web app is the only other zero-fee option in this comparison); you still pay the spread.

  • Deposits: $5 for a new account (Ethereum, other EVM chains, Solana, Tron) and $10 from Bitcoin; existing accounts can top up from $3 on EVM chains and Solana.
  • Withdrawals: secure withdrawals via Ethereum from 1 USDC; fast withdrawals (USDC via Arbitrum) from 4 USDC. Guide: Lighter deposits and withdrawals.
  • Spot: 10 spot books with a $10 minimum, except LIT/USDC (0.001 USDC minimum quote, 1 LIT minimum size). ETH/USDC needs at least 0.005 ETH, which is more than $10 at current prices.

Because a trade costs nothing on Standard, Lighter suits strategies built from many small orders: grids, scale-ins, daily buys. What Standard gives up (a taker delay) is covered in our Lighter fees guide.

9. Aster minimum order: 5 USDT, except where the lot is bigger

Aster’s minimum order is 5 USDT on all 585 order-book perps; on BTC, the 0.001 BTC minimum quantity makes it about $82.07. ETH (0.001 ETH ≈ $2.41) and SOL (0.01 SOL ≈ $1.05) lots are small enough that 5 USDT governs; rounded up to the next lot, the smallest ETH order is about $7.24 and the smallest SOL order about $5.26. Aster’s deposit API shows no minimum deposit; withdrawals pay destination-chain gas, from about 1 USDT. At the 0.04% general taker rate, a 5 USDT market order costs $0.002. Details: Aster deposits and withdrawals, Aster fee structure.

10. edgeX: the highest minimums

edgeX sets a minimum order size per contract: 0.001 BTC (≈ $82), 0.03 ETH (≈ $72) and 0.5 SOL (≈ $53), with size steps of 0.001 BTC, 0.01 ETH and 0.1 SOL (V2 API, re-read October 1, 2026). That is about 8 times Hyperliquid’s floor on BTC. Leverage shrinks the margin (a 0.001 BTC position at 20x needs about $4.10), but every order and every grid rung is at least that size. Minimum deposit 10 USDC; withdrawals to Ethereum pay gas only, other chains 0.1% with a $1 minimum.

11. dYdX, Paradex, Pacifica and Polymarket Perps

  • dYdX: sizes must be a multiple of each market’s step size, with no dollar minimum in the market data. On its 78 active markets the steps are 0.0001 BTC (≈ $8.21), 0.001 ETH (≈ $2.41) and 0.1 SOL (≈ $10.52). See the dYdX review.
  • Paradex: $10 minimum notional on all 63 perps, fine size increments (0.00001 BTC); retail web-app orders pay 0% maker and 0% taker. No published minimum deposit.
  • Pacifica: $10 minimum order on all 78 markets. Deposit USDC on Solana from $10; a USDC withdrawal costs $1. See the Pacifica review.
  • Polymarket Perps: $10 minimum notional on all 89 markets; minimum deposit 10 pUSD. With positions open, a withdrawal must leave 10% of open notional in the account. See the Polymarket Perps review.

12. Worked examples for small accounts

A $50 account on Hyperliquid

Deposit 50 USDC (above the 5 USDC minimum). A $10 ETH long at 5x needs $2.00 of margin and costs $0.0045 to open as taker. Five such trades a day for a month (open and close, 300 fills) cost about $1.35 in fees. Withdrawing the balance once costs 0.2 USDC plus a little gas, 0.4% of the account. For a small account, one bad liquidation matters far more than the percentage fee.

A 20-rung grid

Venue and marketSmallest rungNotional for 20 rungs
Hyperliquid / Lighter / Paradex / Pacifica, any market$10$200
Aster ETH / SOL≈ $7.24 / $5.26≈ $145 / $105
Aster BTC0.001 BTC ≈ $82.07≈ $1,641
edgeX ETH0.03 ETH ≈ $72≈ $1,447
edgeX BTC0.001 BTC ≈ $82≈ $1,641

Prices at October 20, 2026. Leverage lowers the margin needed, not the minimum order.

A $200 grid on Lighter pays no trading fee on Standard. On Hyperliquid, with every rung filled as maker, a buy and a sell of $10 cost $0.003 together. Setup: Hyperliquid grid bot.

Daily $10 buys (DCA)

Hyperliquid spot: a 10 USDC buy of HYPE or UBTC costs $0.007 at the 0.070% spot taker fee, about $0.21 a month. Lighter spot costs $0 on Standard, but it has no BTC or HYPE book. Either way, move coins out in one batch, not daily, to avoid paying a withdrawal fee each time.

13. Which DEX for a small account?

  • Deepest markets with a low floor: Hyperliquid ($10 minimum, 5 USDC deposit, the most perp volume). The best default for most traders.
  • Lowest cost on many small orders: Lighter (0% on Standard, $10 minimum, $5 deposit).
  • Lowest headline minimum: Aster (5 USDT) for ETH, SOL and most alts, but not for BTC.
  • Not for tiny accounts: edgeX, unless you can size orders at 0.001 BTC or 0.03 ETH.

Minimum size is only one factor. Compare fees in Hyperliquid fees and best DEX for low fees, withdrawal costs in DEX withdrawal fees compared, and the whole field in our best DEX guide. New to this? Start with what a DEX is and how to use Hyperliquid.

14. FAQ

What is the minimum order size on Hyperliquid?

$10 of notional value per perp order, on every market. Spot orders need at least 10 USDC (10 units of the quote token), and a TWAP order needs $100 in total with at least $10 per suborder. In coins, the smallest BTC order is 0.00013 BTC at current prices, because sizes are rounded to 5 decimals on BTC; there is no 0.001 BTC minimum.

What does "Order must have minimum value of $10" mean?

It is Hyperliquid's MinTradeNtl rejection: the order's size times its price is under $10. Increase the size (or, for a limit order far below the market, the size at that price) until the order is worth at least $10. The spot version reads "Order must have minimum value of 10" followed by the quote token, for example 10 USDC.

How much money do I need to start trading on Hyperliquid?

The protocol minimums are a 5 USDC deposit and a $10 order. A $10 position needs $2.00 of margin at 5x or $1.00 at 10x, so a few dollars are technically enough. In practice, start with something like $50: one bad trade then does not wipe you out, and the 0.2 USDC withdrawal fee (plus a tiny gas fee) is only 0.4% of the account. Deposits under 5 USDC can be lost.

What is the minimum deposit on Hyperliquid?

5 USDC on the USDC deposit routes; smaller deposits can be lost. Native coins deposited through Unit have their own minimums: 0.0003 BTC, 0.007 ETH and 0.12 SOL. Withdrawals cost a flat 0.2 USDC plus a tiny HyperEVM gas fee.

Does the $10 minimum apply to limit orders and scale orders?

Yes. Market, limit and trigger orders all have to be worth at least $10 at their price. A scale order is several limit orders spread over a price range, so each of them has to clear $10: five rungs need at least $50 in total.

Can I close a Hyperliquid position worth less than $10?

Hyperliquid's documentation lists no exception to the $10 rule. Some third-party developer guides say a reduce-only order that closes the whole position is accepted even under $10, but we could not confirm that in the official docs. The safe habit is to avoid partial closes that leave less than $10 open.

What is the minimum order on Lighter and on Aster?

Lighter: $10 on every one of its 210 active perp markets, and trading is free on Standard accounts. Aster: 5 USDT minimum notional on all 585 order-book perps, but BTC also has a 0.001 BTC minimum quantity, so the smallest BTC order is about $82.07.

Which DEX has the lowest minimum order?

Aster's 5 USDT is the lowest dollar floor, except on BTC. dYdX has no dollar floor at all, only a step size (0.0001 BTC is about $8.21). Hyperliquid, Lighter, Paradex, Pacifica and Polymarket Perps all use $10. edgeX is the highest: 0.03 ETH (about $72) and 0.001 BTC (about $82, the same as Aster’s BTC lot).
